Follow the Light
Notice how light and shadow change an ordinary subject.
About 10–15 minutes · flexible
- 1
Find a patch of interesting light or a soft shadow.
- 2
Place an object nearby. Don't touch hot lamps or climb to reach a window.
- 3
Photograph it from two sides. Look at which parts become bright and which become dark.
- 4
Make a third picture that includes the shadow as part of the subject.
Choose
Pick the photo in which the light feels most interesting to you.
Try another idea
Revisit the same spot later and notice whether the shadow has moved.
Think about it
“If the light disappeared, would this be the same picture?”
Optional pet version
Photograph a relaxed cat resting in a sunbeam. Let the animal stay comfortable, avoid flash near its eyes and never move or chase it to get a photo. Use a toy if no animal is nearby. Never look at or photograph the sun directly through a viewfinder.
